Cheap desks can solve a lot of design problems or give you a cohesive home style. You might want to makeover your office but you just don’t have the money for it. You might even just decide that you finally need a home office and you really don’t have any way to furnish it. Here are a few sources and design ideas to find cheap desks.
Learn to style laminate furniture. Laminate is one of the most inexpensive materials out there but you might be a little bit disappointed that you can’t afford a real wood desk. However, laminate can look just as good as the wood desk. It’s really important to just embrace the new design style instead of thinking of it as a limitation. You might be able to find one with stainless steel accents for more of a modern look. Plus, if it’s small or fits into a corner it will take up less space, which is perfect for kids, teens or a dorm room. You do want to make sure that the desk is sturdy enough to meet all of your needs.
Just because you have a cheap desk doesn’t mean that the room has to look cheap. You can just decorate with a lot of paint finishes and bring in accessories to help tie the room together. You can still feel good about your space even if you don’t have a lot of money to spend. You might need to find a style that will compliment a double leather bed, dressing table stools, or stainless steel benches depending on whether you’re working in a computer room, sewing room, or guest bedroom.
Turn your desk into a DIY project. This is really important for most pieces that you find at a thrift store. They are going to need a little bit of refinishing or at least painting. In some cases you may need to you tighten screws or replace a few parts. If your desk has a lot of dings in it then just embrace this as much as possible. You can try going for a rustic feel by really distressing it with a bunch of different sandpaper and chains. This make the entire piece look intentional while still getting a rustic design. Plus, you get to take out your frustrations on your furniture.
A problem that you’ll often run into when buying cheap desks is that it will be missing a drawer. There are several different design solutions that you can use for this. You could put baskets inside the drawers to work as storage. You can make a small curtain to cover the empty space with fabric. It’s really just a matter of thinking about what you need and how you can accomplish that.
