Stick with Classic Shapes

The Bluebell Tattnall Street pattern from Paula Deen is one of my favorite sets because it looks like vintage china yet it is dishwasher and microwave safe. It’s the more elegant side of country design. I know that square sets are very popular, but it’s just too modern unless it has a very vintage pattern on it. This could work on a shabby chic, country, French Country, farmhouse, or traditional table so there are multiple ways to style it.

Try a Farmhouse Look

The farmhouse look tends to use more of a pottery style. It’s all about the simplicity here but in a material that feels quite hearty. Notice the unique shape of the plates, they aren’t square or round really. It also uses a finish that is more classic than contemporary. Often in this style you’ll see a chocolate brown and turquoise drip glaze that feels quite modern. In this style though you can pair it with any fresh flower centerpieces, distressed tabletops, or vintage napkins to add in that more country look.

Classic Patterns

This style can be quite classic. I love Corelle because of the durability but usually it’s just too country for me. However, the Classic Cafe Blue plates use a cheerful palette which is a must for this style. However, it’s simpler without a lot of pattern to it. It reminds me of the popular ticking stripes that are popular on most everything. Red, yellow, or green would also be suitable here but a color like black would take it into more of a traditional or French direction.

Unique Shelving

This is a great place to display decorative accessories as well as books. If you already have certain items in your room such as leather furniture, painted mantles, granite tiles, and brown accessories then a wood bookcase can really be the way to go. This is just a chance to get a very unique kind of design in a bold color. The great thing about these pieces is that they are large. This means that it is going to be the focal point of the room and can add architectural details into spaces that may seem a little bit plain.

Traditional Styles

If you want an antique black bookcase style then you’re really going to want to go with more of a china cabinet look or intricate side pandles. This will include glass doors often. This is also a very oversized piece. You can find old china cabinets at hotel liquidators or in surplus stores very inexpensively. Just the glass is really going to change things up. If you want to hide away books then consider frosting the glass for more of a contemporary vibe or the other option would be to put fabric or even paper behind the glass. This works well with more traditional living room sets. The color is really what is going to make it pop and so that things don’t seem a little bit bland.

Ladder Styles

This is a cheap and modern style but you will sacrifice doors here. Instead, you get a unique silhouette. If you have a black ladder bookcase then this really helps you create a lot of different design styles but you won’t find doors on it. The lines are very contemporary but you can also pair it with different accents for a traditional look. Of course you will need to make sure that these items are secure because it is using a stairstep design. The really great thing about this is that there is a lot of open space so that your room doesn’t feel too heavy. With all of the storage solutions you need to check out the weight requirements. More modern bookshelves aren’t made to handle tons of heavy books so you really need to know what your particular piece of furniture is capable of before you start stacking pieces on top of it. You can use this design with a lot of trendy items such as modern style vases for a fashionable look that also has a little bit of flair to it.

Cubby Styles

If you want more of a contemporary black bookcase then you can keep it low to the ground. There is no rule that says that the pieces have to go all the way up the wall. This is also a great solution for smaller spaces. It also works well in kitchens or an office. This is a great solution if you only have a few books that need storage.

Another option for a black bookcase cabinet is to turn it into a DIY project. You can really make it yourself just from an old dresser. You can find all different kinds of these plans online. The great thing about this is that then you get the opportunity to customize pieces that may be sentimental to you. You may just find an entirely new bedroom set and you’re stuck with a dresser that now you don’t know what to do with. This also mimics high end designer furniture that is sold for thousands of dollars but you can get the same look and still get something totally different than just a plain old bookcase.

Metal

If you’re worried about the color then consider going with more of a combination. A good way to do this is with iron details. This can also contain a lot of scrollwork. This can be a way to store cookbooks in a kitchen with different coordinating black appliances or just a bistro kind of set. You will want to bring in another wood tone on this and just more iron accents to make it more French country, Tuscan, or Spanish depending on the accessories that you put in it.

Striped Rugs

I love the use for this as a kitchen mat. Even if you just have white appliances this adds a subtle beach theme to your room. You again have the choice of lots of colors like gray, black, red, green, and yellow instead of just blue. The secret here is a 100 percent cotton. It’s even called a deck stripe pattern. Most of these rugs shouldn’t have borders on them to keep within the casual and modern feel.

Jute

Find a natural texture that mimics rope like sisal. This really takes it into more of a nautical design. These kinds of cable and rope patterns are very popular on knitted throws, doorstops, and even table lamps. If I was going to do a beach room I would probably stick with a pale blue wall color and lots of rope accessories instead of going with a more obvious beach theme. I like that it’s different than the typical coir welcome mat.

Coral Motifs

This is more sophisticated and modern than a typical seashell design. It doesn’t even have to use blue this way. it can use a bright color and even works with more modern furniture this way.

Change Up the Shade of Blue

Any solid color of rug or even a braided design will work if it’s in the right color. Look for a navy blue or a turquoise. Stick with lower pile carpets like what you would see in a beach house. This is usually done to keep sand from getting tracked through the house. Even if you don’t live near the water these styles of rugs are cheap and contemporary.

Find an Elegant Feel

Vintage patio furniture doesn’t have to be reminiscent of your grandma’s house. Stay away from typical faded floral prints and get more of a geometric edge. This is another print that’s very common in interior fabric but will look beautiful against white wicker. It almost looks like a lattice or clover print but it’s more geometric.

Go Elegant

Black wicker furniture can be modern or elegant depending on what fabric you choose. My favorite fabric is the Postale or Postal style. It’s so expensive for indoor use that I was pleased to see how inexpensive this linen texture was. However, since it’s not rated for outdoors try it in a sunroom temporarily or a breakfast nook. Sometimes a wicker chair is even part of a living room so it’s important to know that it’s not always going to be an outdoor fabric so check it specifically for your use.

Get a Cheerful Vibe

White wicker to me seems very cheerful and bright but might feel dated. You can still use a typical floral print but get brighter colors and a more abstract pattern. You could match this with solid bright green or red fabrics for awnings or other furniture cushions. If you went with a full on tropical feel it wouldn’t really relate to the furniture at all but the lighter background on this pattern makes all the difference.

Vanity Stools with Backs

This should be cheaper than buying an actual chair and more of the right height and size too. It may just have a lower back; but even this much of a difference can provide more support. A skirt gives it a shabby chic feel or works with a farmhouse or vintage style vanity.

Bathroom Vanity Chairs

I find that one of the more durable materials for bathrooms is metal which is usually cheaper. Look for pieces with a cushion that is detachable so that you can recover it in a fabric that matches your window treatments or vanity stools.

Vanity Stools and Benches

Make sure that the fabric you choose will hold up to lots of steam. Sometimes if this isn’t for makeup you may want to get a bench instead which is a more comfortable place to take off shoes or pick out an outfit if you also have a closet in your bathroom.

Match it to The Style of Vanity

Right now granite tops and dark rich tones are very popular and very common too. However, measure carefully before you buy. Usually the makeup area will be set slightly lower than the rest of the countertop. Otherwise you’ll need a higher stool. Sometimes faux wrought iron is actually the cheapest and fanciest; just make sure it matches your faucet and the rest of your hardware.

Patchwork Styles

The patchwork style is usually something I avoid because it looks so homemade. I do like this color palette because it creates a gender neutral palette and could even be used as a modern wedding quilt. If this was in any other color palette it would probably only work with an oak bedroom set but here it can be cottage or contemporary depending on whether you see it with black, white, or even gray furniture. It also can complement ticking stripe bedding beautifully such as on a bed skirt. Ticking stripes are another classic country fabric that is now popular in this color palette so it mixes and matches beautifully.

Damask Prints

It’s not easy to make quilts contemporary but this color palette definitely helps. For this style look for actual quilting instead of ties. Go with one flat piece and a uniform machine quilted design. Don’t use patchwork styles but just have one solid pattern so it looks like a comforter.

Ruffles

This was one of the most unexpected styles that I’ve found. I love the texture of ruffles but they tend to be a little bit too heavy so I like more of the micro-ruffle styles of these. In most of these quilts the black really dominates but here it would be suitable for a twin bed because it is so subtle and it could even be shabby chic.

Laura Ashley Amberley

Usually Laura Ashley isn’t my favorite bedding designer just because it can usually be so country. She is probably the Quilt Queen. However, again this color palette has changed my mind because the toile style is so chic. The reviewers did have some discrepancies about colors.

Setting the Stage With Inspired

The cabinetry and furniture is a little different than what you would find in a typical kitchen. In this space it’s really where the character and the color comes in the room. For instance, this is one of the few design styles that can really work with an olive green or a mustard yellow. The color should be quite subdued and might even be glazed. This really gives you an opportunity to paint your existing cabinets and make them a little bit different than all of the white cabinets that are out there.

Other paint colors that might be acceptable for this kind of design style include a taupe or off white. Nothing in this room should be an extremely bright white. This can seem a little bit modern. This even involves your appliances. Of course, you can still get that contemporary element by bringing in stainless steel appliances. Of course, it will really stand out with this kind of design style but you can make it work if it is something that you just have to have.

Mix and Match Accessories

The decor in this kind of kitchen is that of a very mix and match kind of style. These rooms are often added to over time. In fact, some of these houses could be older than anything we have in our entire country. In this case, you really are going to want to embrace this feeling. Of course everything still needs to have a little bit of a sense of cohesion to it. At the same time it shouldn’t just all seem new. A great way to do this is to just repurpose furniture. You can find a lot of old pieces and antiques. Look for painted finishes that you can turn into a kitchen island. This is perfect if you have wood cabinetry and you just want to break up the space. Also, if you have a painted cabinet you may want to go with more of a natural wood grain because this will really add a spot of character and since you are just using this on the island it really won’t be that expensive.

Appliances

Another option for appliances would just be to go with more of a farmhouse feeling. An easy way to do this is to just find a special fridge and then you can have a cupboard affixed to it. The same thing goes for the dishwasher. This will really give your room a very seamless vibe to it.

You should also really focus in on the range hood. This is really going to be the focal point of your entire space. It should incorporate a lot of different elements from nature or just have a very oversized appearance to it. It’s almost the focal point of the space the way that a fireplace would be in other rooms in your home.

What to Look For

My favorite versions are silver leaf or antique silver so there are different tones to it. It’s probably both the most expensive and most popular piece of wall art you can buy at the moment. It’s also at the top of my list of must haves for my living room. Look for a smaller size and hang up several of them because this could be cheaper than one large wall mirror.

A frameless design will be more French inspired and have the look of a clover, which is another common name for these. I would see this design working in a living room but my favorite versions are in bathrooms.

You can get these at so many different stores like Wal-Mart, Target, or Bed Bath & Beyond. Amazon.com has a large selection that is pretty reasonably priced and some of the pieces are even on sale. You’ll need to not whether you have a square or a t-shaped cushion though.

White Twill Styles

This can have a longer skirt so you won’t have to paint the legs. If you have a patterned or newer sofa this allows you to save money and freshen up the rest of your accent pieces. Since it is a slipcover you can take it off and wash it easily so it isn’t quite as scary as other white upholstered furniture.

Shabby Chic Style

Typically this would just be a floral print but you may want something more neutral. Look for ruffle trim on a neutral color. Paint the legs of your furniture white or even a fun turquoise for this look.

Leather Looks

This can have an Old World feel to it so try a darker color. It will be a stretchy fabric though so be aware that it won’t be the heavy upholstery weight that you’re used to. However, it will be easy to clean.
