Mad Men Decor – Inspiration and Style Ideas

I usually watch the show for style tips, not for decor tips. I know that the decor is probably just as accurate as or more so than the wardrobes. I’m just not a big mid-century mod person though. To me, it reminds me of a doctor’s office. However, there are a few pieces of Mad Men decor that even I have to have and I’ve been lucky enough to find some cheap reproductions at Amazon.com to ogle.

These Aren’t The Exact Pieces but It’s Style Inspiration

How to Decorate Your Home Like Mad Men

1. I would love the grasscloth (or at least grasscloth style) wallpaper in Megan and Don’s apartment. I would skip the wood paneling and the lighter carpet which was even a key player in one episode. However, I’ve wanted this style of wallpaper for awhile. I would most likely stick with a lighter color or even a blue version. I think Bertram Cooper also has this style in his office too at Sterling Cooper Draper Price.

2. I knew that the velvet tufted headboard I had been longing over was really familiar until I watched the show again. There it was in Betty’s room. No wonder it became popular. I would go for a smaller and more simplistic version to save some money but would like to stick with a similar blue or velvet shade.

3. Get yourself a Rothko. If you don’t have several million dollars find a print or a poster. This is my favorite artwork on the show although I chose a different color palette than the one in Bert’s office.

4. White tulip tables. Roger Sterling’s office is by far my favorite. It really contrasts against his personality. He has a white tulip table in it. Plus, the all white, gray, and black design really contrasts against the rest of the office thus making it my favorite set in the whole show. The Ero Saairen style is much easier to find in side or dining table styles. There are white marble versions or just go for a plain fiberglass look.

5. The le corbusier style chaise in Roger’s office looks so comfortable. Instead of a white version though I opted for a brown and white pony that would suit my living room.

6. I’d also want an arc lamp which again is in Roger’s office. These are popular in more contemporary decor so I’d personally choose one with a marble base

I didn’t even get to Roger’s office chair. I guess I know which space I love the most. If you had to pick your favorite set from Mad Men what would it be? For me using this kind of decor in your home is about restraint. Use bright wall colors, fewer accessories, and skip all of the faux wood grains so it doesn’t look like a thrift store.

Mad Men Glasses – Scotch and Whiskey Barware

This show means different things to different people. For me it’s all about Joan Holloway and Betty Draper. I would classify the show with one of their iconic dresses, or Joan’s pen necklace. For other people it’s all about the bar in the office and the central role that it plays. You may be wondering what the scotch and whiskey glasses are on the show.

What Kind Is It?

After doing some reading it looks like it may be Dorothy Thorpe or at least inspired by this type of barware. It has a silver rim around it. Finding it is expensive unless you’re lucky enough to happen upon it at a garage sale.

Modern versions at Amazon.com are much cheaper. Plus, most of these will be lead free. You’ll be looking for the “Silver Band”. It’s funny that these glasses are the most popular. If you can’t find the silver rim stick with a simple 1960s shape. The show often features a martini glass in its artwork but the scotch glasses are the pieces that get all the attention!

Country Style Dinnerware Sets – French, Primitive, Casual and Stoneware

Country dinnerware sets are usually my least favorite. It is usually too cutesy with ivy details on it or a French Country rooster look. It just doesn’t seem like quality to me. However, there are a few tips I have to make this style more sophisticated while still remaining in that durable, cheap, and easy to clean category that suits the country style.

Stick with Classic Shapes

The Bluebell Tattnall Street pattern from Paula Deen is one of my favorite sets because it looks like vintage china yet it is dishwasher and microwave safe. It’s the more elegant side of country design. I know that square sets are very popular, but it’s just too modern unless it has a very vintage pattern on it. This could work on a shabby chic, country, French Country, farmhouse, or traditional table so there are multiple ways to style it.

Try a Farmhouse Look

The farmhouse look tends to use more of a pottery style. It’s all about the simplicity here but in a material that feels quite hearty. Notice the unique shape of the plates, they aren’t square or round really. It also uses a finish that is more classic than contemporary. Often in this style you’ll see a chocolate brown and turquoise drip glaze that feels quite modern. In this style though you can pair it with any fresh flower centerpieces, distressed tabletops, or vintage napkins to add in that more country look.

Classic Patterns

This style can be quite classic. I love Corelle because of the durability but usually it’s just too country for me. However, the Classic Cafe Blue plates use a cheerful palette which is a must for this style. However, it’s simpler without a lot of pattern to it. It reminds me of the popular ticking stripes that are popular on most everything. Red, yellow, or green would also be suitable here but a color like black would take it into more of a traditional or French direction.
